Beams for European Neutrino Experiments
BENE is a Networking Activity (N3) in the
framework of CARE
The aim of this NA is to coordinate and integrate the activities of the accelerator and particle physics communities working together, in a worldwide context, towards achieving superior neutrino (_) beam facilities for Europe. The final objectives are:
BENE is structured in five Work Packages. PHYSICS (M. Mezzetto), DRIVER (C. Cavata), TARGET (R. Bennett), COLLECTOR (J.E. Campagne), NOVEL NEUTRINO BEAMS (R. Edgecock, F. Meot for the MUFRONT and MUEND section of Neutrino Factories and M.Lindroos for the BETABEAM).
BENE Meetings are joint ECFA/BENE Weeks of meetings, held jointly with the regular meetings of the ECFA Muon Study Groups
In the first half of 2005, we plan to hold one ECFA/BENE Week, March 16-18, contribute to the preparation of the NNN05 Workshop at the Frejus Laboratory April 7-9 and then to host in Frascati the International NuFact05 Workshop June 21-26. We plan to assemble the NuFact05 Proceedings in the form of "comprehensive book type documentation" to the CERN management, as an input to their decision process on accelerator R&D choices. June 05 is a decisive date for us and we are trying to plan all the steps (studies, reports, events) necessary to get successfully there. Many young European physicists should attend the Nufact05 Summer School that will precede the Workshop, with a mix of about 50% neutrino physics and 50% accelerator neutrino science.
Our last meeting was the BENE04 Workshop 2-5 November 2004 at DESY, in the frame of the yearly CARE04 meeting. It was our first one away from CERN. We will have one each year in the four years ahead of us.
A Workshop EXPLORING THE IMPACT of NEW NEUTRINO BEAMS was organized , at the ECT (TRENTO, Italy) 18-22 October 2004, by C. Volpe with help from the BENE PHYSICS WP and the BEATABEAM team in the & NOVEL NEUTRINO BEAMS WP.
Our 5th yearly international meeting (NuFact, the International Workshop on Neutrino Factories & Superbeams) was in Osaka this year (July 26-August 1). Is is already NuFact04, by now. We Europeans attended and contributed in forces.
As in the last two years already, a NuFact International Summer School in Tokyo (July 16-24) will preceed it. Few Europeans caught the opportunity to send our students and post-docs there, as an introduction to the Workshop.
Our Spring 2004 meeting was 24-28 May 2004 at CERN. It included the Workshop on "Physics with a Megawatt proton source" on May 25-26, that explored both the short and long term opportunities to particle and nuclear physics offered by a multi-MW beam with a few GeV from a proton accelerator
Our Winter 2004 meeting was 16-20 February 2004 at CERN. A HARP CM opened the week and ECFA/BENE activities followed.
The kick off meeting of the BENE Networking Activity was held jointly with the regular meetings of the ECFA Muon Study Groups 17-21 November 2003
